Job Description

Our canine group, under Allied Universal® Enhanced Protection Services, is hiring a Windsor EDC Trainer.  The Windsor Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) Trainer will report to the Director of Canine Training, and primarily work in the Windsor, Connecticut training facility. The Windsor EDC Trainer position is designed for an individual eager to develop a broad skill set in three key areas: EDC Trainer, Imprinter, and Instructor. This role will be responsible for working across these functions, ensuring the highest standards of canine explosive detection training. This individual will play a critical role in minimizing the risk of performance failures, ultimately enhancing the safety of our clients and saving lives.  The Windsor Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) Trainer will complete an extensive training program, where the individual will gain hands-on experience and expertise in canine imprinting, training, and handler instruction.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess canine behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses, adapting training approaches accordingly
  • Identify canines who are fast-track candidates for quicker progression and explore ways to challenge them for accelerated development
  • Work closely with the existing Windsor Canine Training Staff to optimize the process from imprintation to pairing canines with handlers and training the handlers in best practices
  • Collaborate with the Director of Canine Training and other management and canine training personnel to determine the best strategies for each dog, ensuring that only the most suitable canines progress through the training program
  • Research and apply cutting-edge techniques that may be tested and refined to improve training methods and the overall program. Introduce and contribute new approaches once developed and tested
  • Continuously engage in research and development to stay current with the latest training techniques and innovative methods; challenge traditional approaches as new scientific insights emerge
  • Continuously research advancements in explosive detection canine handling instruction and service delivery; incorporate latest tools and resources into canine training and imprinting programs
  • Specific areas of research, evaluation, and implementation include (but are not limited to):
    • Imprinting and operational training techniques for green dogs (canines that are not yet fully trained but have the potential to become effective explosive detection dogs)
    • Assessment for health, drive, demeanor, social behavior, and other key characteristics to determine which canines are suitable for further training or should be returned to the breeder
    • Techniques to help reduce the risk of canine performance failure
  • Train and imprint up to 6-8 canines at a time, focusing on explosive odor recognition, primary alerts, and basic operational training exercises
  • Expose canines to different levels of odor recognition training and assess their readiness for fieldwork with EDC handlers
  • Track the progress of each canine through the imprinting and operational training stages, ensuring all dogs meet necessary nationally recognized standards
  • Participate in maintaining the training facility, ensuring that all explosive materials are securely stored and properly handled in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures, and applicable law.
  • Organize training materials and ensure the cleanliness and safety of the facility

QUALIFICATIONS (MUST HAVE):

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a basic canine training course
  • Training on explosive material handling and storage
  • Must possess one or more of the following
    • Minimum of two (2) years of military service, preferably in a combat deployment or other tactically operating capacity
    • Minimum of two (2) years in a law enforcement role and completed an accredited Law Enforcement Academy (Municipal/State/Federal)
    • Minimum of two (2) years as a municipal or federal correctional officer and attended a full-time accredited Law Enforcement/Corrections Academy (must have enforcement responsibilities)
  • Prior work experience training working canines
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working scent detection dogs in either explosives, narcotics, or accelerant
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel)
  • Self-motivated, strong work ethic, and willingness to work independently
  • Basic knowledge of classical and operant conditioning techniques
  • Ability to collaborate with the trainers to ensure the overall process for students is positive and achieving desired results.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (NICE TO HAVE):

  • Prior experience training working canines in a military or law enforcement setting

Pay $62,896 to $64,896 per year
